Stump Grinding in Placer County

Placer County changes character about every fifteen minutes of driving, and stump work changes with it.

Down toward Roseville and Lincoln, lots are flat and close together and the trees are lawn oaks running surface roots through the sod. Around Auburn and Newcastle you get a mix of old fruit ground, native oak, and side yards built before anyone owned a wide machine. Up past Meadow Vista toward Colfax and Foresthill the ground pitches hard, the pines get tall, and most homes are on a well.

We use the same grinder for all of it. How we set up depends on the property.

Fire season leaves stumps behind

A lot of the county work follows something else. A dead pine comes out during defensible-space clearing, or a beetle-killed tree finally comes down, and whoever cut it left a stump three feet tall at the edge of the clearing.

That stump is still fuel, still a trip hazard in the dark, and still in the way of a mower or a trailer. We grind it 6 to 12 inches under so the ground is clear. What we're not is a fuels-reduction crew for an entire parcel. Ridge mastication is a different contract and a different machine.

Access is the county-wide problem

In town it's a 36-inch gate and a side yard with the trash cans in it. In the foothills it's a quarter mile of gravel, a ranch gate, and a slope the machine has to hold. On a shared drive it's a neighbor's fence a foot off the stump.

All three are workable, but they're workable for different reasons, so tell us which one you've got before anyone loads a trailer.
